Stephen Ambrose Gorman
Southern Utilities Company, Inc. was founded by Stephen Ambrose Gorman in 1932. The company was originally a distributor of Bell & Gossett products with a territory from the Mason Dixon Line to the Florida Keys. He was a graduate of Catholic University of America with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and joined the U.S. Naval Reserve Flying Corps as part of the second graduating class at Pensacola, Florida.
After WWI, he returned to Washington, DC and became a pioneer in the HVAC industry. The business continued to grow until his untimely death in April 1935, at which time his wife Mary took over leadership. In 1947, her eldest son Stephen Francis joined the company full-time.
The business expanded further, and in 1958, her youngest son Joseph, upon completing a Mechanical Engineering degree and serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, joined full-time. Joe retired on March 31, 2005 after 48 years of service, succeeded by Robert (Bob) Gorman, who led the successful transition of the Maryland location from Silver Spring to Gaithersburg.
In the spring of 2007, Pat Gorman became president, continuing the growth and success of the business. Now in its fourth generation, Southern Utilities looks forward to serving the future needs of the HVAC industry.
As of May 31st, 2025, after 93 years and four generations of family ownership, Southern Utilities has closed its doors for business. Moving forward, Cummins-Wagner will be managing new business.
